Endermologie

Attempts to speed cell metabolism

  • Invented and initially used by French plastic surgeons, Endermologie is a non-invasive procedure that mechanically massages cellulite-laden areas of the skin to increase the flow of blood and oxygen to the dimpled tissue. This process—theoretically, at least—speeds up the metabolism of the fat cells in that tissue, causing them to shrink in size. The toxins and fluids from the fat are then eliminated through the body’s lymphatic system.

While the Endermologie device massages the treatment area, a suction device gently pulls on the skin to smooth it out and remove dimpling.

Endermlogie has received FDA approval for the temporary reduction of cellulite. It’s often used as an adjunct to traditional liposuction surgery.

    The Endermologie treatment

For best results, you should drink 6 to 8 glasses of water on the day of the procedure—and continue to do so daily during the weeks you’re undergoing treatments. Staying hydrated will help your body eliminate the fat discharged by the procedure.

Endermologie is often likened to a deep tissue massage. Most people find this sensation pleasant, but if you are particularly sensitive to pain, tell your physician. He or she will be able to adjust the pressure of the rollers to suit your comfort level.

    Many treatments needed

Endermologie sessions generally last 30 to 45 minutes. You will feel some soreness for a few hours afterward. Most people require 10 to 20 treatment sessions for best results. The effects are temporary, so occasional follow-up treatments are also needed.
